Olumide Oyedeji: From Ibadan to International Basketball Leadership.
Olumide Oyedeji (born 11 May 1981 in Ibadan, Nigeria) emerged from local Nigerian basketball to become one of Africa’s most influential basketball figures. He began his early basketball development at Loyola College in Ibadan before moving to Europe, where his performances in Russia and Germany garnered international attention.
His professional breakthrough came when the Seattle SuperSonics selected him 42nd overall in the 2000 NBA Draft.
Oyedeji’s NBA tenure spanned three seasons, first with the SuperSonics and then the Orlando Magic (2000–2003). Over 93 NBA games, he averaged 1.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.1 assists per contest, serving primarily as a reserve big man.
While his NBA numbers were modest, they reflect the barrier‑breaking nature of his progression from Nigerian leagues to the world’s top basketball competition.

On the national stage, Oyedeji was a long‑serving captain of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team (D’Tigers) from 2006 to 2016. Under his leadership, Nigeria captured its first AfroBasket title in 2015 and earned multiple FIBA Africa Nations Cup medals, as well as a gold medal at the 2011 All‑Africa Games. He also led the team at the 2012 London Olympics, marking Nigeria’s first Olympic appearance in basketball.
Beyond playing, Oyedeji has transitioned into sports governance and athlete advocacy. He has served as President of the Nigeria Olympians Association (NOA) and Third Vice‑President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), where he champions athlete development and welfare.
In January 2026, Oyedeji was elected Secretary‑General of the World Olympians Association, becoming the first African to hold this prestigious role.
