BABANGIDA RULED”: WHY WISE MEN DO NOT JOIN EVERY ISSUE

By: Sani Abdullahi Kofar-mata
Date: 1st May 2026
INTRODUCTION
In life, leadership, and human relationships, one of the clearest signs of wisdom is not merely the ability to speak, but the discipline to know when silence is the best response. True maturity is not measured by how quickly one reacts to provocation, criticism, disagreement, or insult, but by the ability to exercise patience, restraint, emotional discipline, and sound judgment. A wise person understands that not every battle is worth fighting, not every criticism deserves a reply, and not every voice requires a response.
In a world where many people seek validation through arguments, public confrontation, and unnecessary competition, the truly wise person chooses peace over pride, dignity over drama, and purpose over provocation. Leadership is not proven by the loudness of one’s voice, but by the depth of one’s judgment, the stability of one’s character, and the calmness of one’s spirit. The strongest leaders are often those who master themselves before attempting to influence others.
Former Military President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, widely known for his political intelligence, strategic foresight, analytical depth, and tactical leadership, remains one of the most discussed and studied figures in Nigeria’s political history. He is often recognised for his forward-thinking approach, his ability to read complex political situations, his diplomatic instincts, and his exceptional understanding of leadership dynamics.
Babangida demonstrated rare qualities of leadership—calmness under pressure, strategic patience, emotional intelligence, social awareness, and the wisdom to understand when engagement is necessary and when silence is the more powerful response. His leadership style reflected not only experience but also a deep understanding of human behaviour, power relations, and the importance of timing in decision-making.
During an interview, he shared a profound principle that reflects this depth of leadership wisdom. He explained that he does not find it necessary to “join issues” with his senior, his mate, or even his junior.
According to him, engaging in unnecessary disputes with a senior is inappropriate because respect and seniority must be preserved. Rationally, joining unnecessary issues with one’s senior is not only indiscipline but also a clear sign of disrespect. It weakens values, destroys mutual regard, and reflects poor character and emotional instability.
Arguing unnecessarily with one’s mate often damages friendship, trust, and mutual understanding among equals. It may also reflect arrogance, pride, ego, and unhealthy competitive tendencies. Instead of building cooperation, it creates rivalry, suspicion, and silent resentment where unity and support should exist.
Engaging in conflict with a junior, on the other hand, lowers one’s dignity and offers no meaningful gain except self-degradation. It reflects serious personal limitations, emotional weakness, and leadership failure. A leader who constantly fights juniors gradually loses honour, respect, moral authority, and public confidence.
When Professor Suleiman Abdullahi Karuwai of the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, watched that interview, he described this remarkable attitude and leadership style as “Babangida Ruled.” He used the phrase to capture the wisdom behind Babangida’s refusal to engage in unnecessary disputes, regardless of whether the person involved was a senior, a mate, or a junior.
His observation was both thoughtful and insightful because it transformed a simple personal principle into a broader leadership philosophy. “Babangida Ruled” has since become a practical lesson in emotional discipline, strategic silence, and dignified leadership.
This principle is built on self-control, emotional maturity, patience, strategic silence, and positive self-awareness. It encourages self-discipline, self-esteem, healthy self-concept, tolerance, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Personally, I strongly believe this philosophy is worthy of emulation because it promotes peace of mind, emotional freedom, stronger relationships, and a more disciplined approach to life and leadership.
THE PRINCIPLE OF “BABANGIDA RULED”
“Babangida Ruled” is not about weakness, fear, or avoidance; it is about wisdom in choosing battles carefully. It teaches that not every criticism deserves a reply, not every insult deserves attention, and not every disagreement requires confrontation.
Many people waste valuable time, energy, opportunities, and even relationships fighting unnecessary battles. They create enemies where peace could have existed and turn minor misunderstandings into lifelong hostility. Joining issues with people unnecessarily often leads to bitterness, hatred, resentment, broken trust, and avoidable division.
A wise person understands that some arguments are too expensive because they cost peace, dignity, friendship, focus, opportunities, and sometimes even destiny. There are battles that may be won verbally but lost morally. There are arguments that may satisfy pride temporarily but damage reputation permanently.
Silence, in many situations, is not surrender—it is superiority. Walking away from useless arguments is not cowardice; it is strength. Refusing to engage in petty conflict is not weakness; it is wisdom.
The strongest people are often not those who speak the loudest, but those who know when not to speak at all.
Remaining positive in difficult situations is also part of wisdom. Positivity does not mean weakness; it means choosing peace over chaos, discipline over emotional disorder, and purpose over pointless conflict.
PATIENCE: THE FOUNDATION OF GREATNESS
Most of life’s difficulties are caused by impatience, immaturity, lack of discipline, intolerance, and poor emotional control. Many problems that could have been resolved peacefully become major crises because people react too quickly without reflection.
Patience is one of the highest forms of wisdom and one of the strongest pillars of leadership. It is rightly said that with enough patience, a man could even cook a stone. This proverb reminds us that time, perseverance, and calmness can achieve what force, anger, and haste cannot.
Great leaders are not those who react to everything, but those who remain calm under pressure and think before they act. Patience protects judgment, while impatience destroys opportunities. A single moment of uncontrolled anger can destroy years of hard-earned respect, trust, and influence.
Patience allows people to understand context before making conclusions. It prevents regrettable words and irreversible actions. It teaches humility, tolerance, and long-term vision.
In both personal and public life, patience is not weakness—it is power. It allows a person to see clearly, decide wisely, and act honourably.
THINKING SHOULD RULE EMOTIONS
One of the greatest weaknesses of many people is that instead of being ruled by sound thinking, they are ruled by emotions. Emotional decisions often produce regret, while thoughtful decisions create lasting solutions.
Anger, pride, jealousy, ego, revenge, greed, and uncontrolled ambition have destroyed many relationships, careers, businesses, institutions, and leadership opportunities. When emotions control actions, wisdom disappears and consequences multiply.
True maturity requires a person to master emotions rather than become a servant to them. Emotional discipline is one of the highest forms of self-leadership. A person who cannot control himself cannot effectively lead others.
Self-control is the foundation of self-respect. A person with strong self-esteem does not need to prove superiority through arguments. A person with a healthy self-concept does not seek validation through unnecessary conflict. A person with inner confidence does not fear silence because silence itself is often a statement of strength.
Reason must guide emotions, not the other way around. Leadership begins with self-mastery. Before leading a nation, an institution, a family, or an organisation, one must first learn to lead oneself.
THE CHALLENGE OF CHRONIC CRITICS
Another reality of life is that some people are naturally difficult to satisfy. They complain when the weather is hot, complain when it is cold, and complain when it rains. Their habit is criticism, not correction.
Such individuals often fail to distinguish between healthy discussion, constructive criticism, and destructive argument. They criticize everything and appreciate little. Some believe nobody has the right answer except themselves, and they see fault where gratitude should exist.
Even blessings are sometimes ignored by such minds because appreciation is absent. They are ungrateful not only to fellow human beings but even to Allah Almighty. They focus more on imperfections than on opportunities, more on complaints than on solutions.
Trying to satisfy everyone is impossible. Human beings are naturally different in thought, expectation, understanding, and perception. Therefore, peace comes when one accepts that approval from everyone is neither realistic nor necessary.
The wise person listens to meaningful correction, ignores useless noise, and remains focused on purpose, principles, and long-term goals.
THE POWER OF SILENCE
As often said, the best way to avoid unnecessary criticism is not always to respond, but sometimes to ignore it completely. Silence can be the strongest answer.
Silence is not weakness; it is discipline. It is not fear; it is strategy. It reflects confidence, maturity, emotional stability, and self-respect. Many battles are won simply by refusing to fight them.
Some people can give advice but cannot implement it. Others may speak little, yet they lead by example. Wisdom is not measured by how much one says, but by how well one manages actions, reactions, and consequences.
Silence preserves dignity where arguments destroy it. Silence protects relationships where pride would have caused damage. Silence gives room for reflection where anger would have created regret.
Sometimes, the most powerful statement a person can make is dignified silence.
LESSONS FOR LEADERSHIP AND DAILY LIFE
Whether in family, politics, business, friendship, community service, or public administration, the principle of “Babangida Ruled” remains relevant. Leaders who react to every criticism weaken themselves. Individuals who answer every provocation lose focus and waste energy meant for progress.
Leadership requires discipline. Respect for seniors, understanding among equals, and patience with juniors are all signs of true greatness. Leadership is not domination; it is responsibility guided by wisdom.
A man who protects his peace protects his future. A leader who chooses wisdom over unnecessary conflict builds trust, respect, credibility, and lasting influence. Leadership is sustained not by noise, but by character.
Nations rise when leaders learn restraint. Families remain united when members choose patience over pride. Institutions become stronger when discipline replaces ego. Communities progress when wisdom overcomes unnecessary rivalry.
This philosophy is not only for politicians—it is for everyone who desires peace, respect, progress, and meaningful success in life. It is a life principle for students, parents, professionals, leaders, and every individual who values dignity over drama.
CONCLUSION
Nobody in this world can satisfy every human being. No matter how sincere, intelligent, hardworking, or well-intentioned a person may be, criticism will always exist. Therefore, peace comes from understanding that not every voice deserves your attention.
The philosophy described as “Babangida Ruled” teaches an important lesson: protect your peace, preserve your dignity, and choose your battles wisely.
A life free from unnecessary grudges, endless arguments, avoidable enemies, and emotional exhaustion is a life of wisdom. Silence, patience, discipline, tolerance, self-esteem, self-concept, and emotional control are not signs of weakness—they are marks of true leadership and personal greatness.
In the end, the person who masters himself is greater than the person who tries to conquer everyone else. True victory is not in defeating people, but in defeating pride, anger, ego, and unnecessary conflict within oneself.
Indeed, sometimes the strongest statement a person can make is to say nothing at all.
