Life is a journey that offers every human being the chance to shape his destiny. The road is full of opportunities, but it is equally full of distractions, temptations, and challenges. Those who succeed are not always the most gifted or the most privileged, but those who learn to discipline themselves control their emotions and live with wisdom.
An old man once said:
When you are alone, mind your thoughts.
When you are with friends, mind your tongue.
When you are angry, mind your temper.
When you are in a group, mind your behaviour.
When you are in trouble, mind your emotions.
When Allah blesses you, mind your ego.
These are not mere sayings; they are the golden keys to living a meaningful and successful life.
1. Guarding the Mind and Tongue
Your thoughts shape your life. If you allow negative, harmful, or lazy thoughts to dominate, they will eventually lead you into failure. On the other hand, disciplined and constructive thinking guides you toward achievement. Likewise, your tongue has the power to build or destroy. Careless words can break friendships, create enmity, or cause regret. Speak only when necessary, and let your words bring peace, not pain.
2. Controlling Anger and Emotions
Anger is like fire: once uncontrolled, it burns everything in its path. A wise person knows that silence in anger is better than speech, and patience in hardship is better than despair. Emotions are not always reliable; they often deceive and mislead. Ninety-nine per cent of the time, feelings exaggerate situations. Therefore, always give your head—the seat of reason—a chance to judge before you act.
3. The Value of Behaviour in Society
When you find yourself among people, your behaviour becomes your identity. Your conduct speaks louder than your words. Discipline yourself to behave with respect, humility, and maturity. Society respects not the loudest or the strongest but the most disciplined and self-controlled.
4. The Danger of Ego in Blessings
When Allah blesses you with wealth, knowledge, power, or position, remember it is not by your effort alone but by His mercy. Guard your ego and remain humble. The arrogant man loses respect, while the humble one gains honour in both this life and the hereafter.
5. Self-Discipline: The Master Key
Without self-discipline, life becomes a drift—like boat without direction. A man without discipline follows the path of least resistance, always looking for shortcuts and pleasures, but never reaching true success. Discipline is what keeps you focused when your emotions want to mislead you. It is what helps you to say “no” when temptation says “yes.”
6. Advice to the Young Ones
Dear young people, success is not magic. It does not fall from the sky. It comes through hard work, patience, discipline, and faith. Guard your private life with dignity and integrity. In your public life, let your words and actions be guided by wisdom and respect. Avoid bad company, for it corrupts good character. Seek knowledge, for it enlightens the mind and gives you direction. Respect your parents, elders, and teachers, for they are bridges to your future.
Above all, place your trust in Allah Almighty. Live with humility, sincerity, and gratitude. This is how life is meant to be lived—by balancing your thoughts with wisdom, your emotions with patience, and your actions with discipline.
In the end, what will define you is not what you feel but what you do with your life. Let discipline guide you, and success will surely follow you.
