My attention has been drawn to a recent statement by the Kano State Government on the alleged diversion of ₦6.5 billion. The release, signed by the DG Media, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, makes spurious claims that must be addressed.

First, the claim that over ₦20 billion was spent through the Directorate of Protocol between February and May 2023 is false.

Records show that the total federal allocation for that period was ₦33.05 billion, and the Directorate’s annual allocation never exceeded ₦300 million. The allegation is therefore misleading and politically motivated.

Second, while admitting that the matter is before a competent court, the government contradicted itself by attempting to absolve the accused through media propaganda. This undermines the judiciary and betrays desperation.

Third, dragging the past administration into a matter that concerns the present government is diversionary. The people of Kano deserve answers, not excuses. Was ₦6.5 billion withdrawn? For what purpose? Was it properly retired with documentation?

Instead of lengthy political rhetoric, the government should publish verifiable records to clear doubts. Accountability is not blackmail; it is the people’s right.

Finally, while I respect the principle of presumption of innocence, due process must prevail. I call on civil society, the media, and anti-graft agencies to remain vigilant. Transparency not propaganda is what Kano people deserved
