OPINION: Constitutional Rights, Political Support, and the Freedom of Choice of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

It is necessary to clearly correct the narrative surrounding the political decisions of the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, FNISE, in line with constitutional provisions and democratic principles.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is not an employee of any political party; rather, he is an elected public officer chosen by the people through a democratic process as Guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Political parties serve as platforms for contesting elections, not employers with contractual authority over elected officials after they assume office.
Therefore, the claim that the Governor must tender any form of resignation letter to a party he chooses to stop supporting has no constitutional or legal foundation.
Under Nigerian law, political support is a matter of personal conviction, conscience, and freedom of association, which is fully protected by the Constitution.
The Governor , like every Nigerian citizen, reserves the right to support, associate with, or disengage from any political party without coercion, intimidation, or compulsion to submit documents against his will.
No individual, faction, or group has the authority to force the Governor to write or submit any paper as a condition for exercising his constitutional rights.
The Constitution clearly provides that freedom of association includes the right to choose what is best for one’s political future at any point in time.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s status as an outstanding and responsible citizen further strengthens his right to make decisions that align with his vision, values, and commitment to public service.
His primary obligation is to the people of Kano State, not to internal party factions or unresolved leadership disputes.
The Governor has consistently demonstrated loyalty to democratic ideals, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to Governance, rather than being entangled in partisan controversies.
Any attempt to interpret political support as employment or to equate party affiliation with servitude undermines the very foundation of democracy.
As a sitting Governor , he enjoys equal protection under the law, just like every ordinary Nigerian, and cannot be treated differently because of his position.
Political maturity demands that parties and their members respect the personal choices of leaders, especially when such choices are made within the ambit of the law.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains focused on delivering Good Governance, peace, and development to Kano State, rising above distractions fueled by political rivalry.
The strength of democracy lies in allowing leaders to make lawful choices without fear, pressure, or undue influence.
In conclusion, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s political decisions are protected by the Constitution, guided by his exemplary citizenship, and driven by the best interest of Kano State, making any attempt to compel him to submit documents or explanations both unnecessary and unconstitutional.
