The Kano State Primary Health Commission has confirmed the detection of four new strains of polio in the state, warning that if vaccination is not continued effectively, the virus could re-emerge after being eradicated.

Professor Salisu Ahmad, who was represented by the Director General of the commission, made this known during a public discussion to mark World Polio Day in Kano on Wednesday.

He said that between 2013 and 2015, Kano was the epicentre of the disease in Nigeria, but thanks to the collaboration of the state government and partners, it was successfully eradicated.

He, however, said that the work is not over, as four new strains of the virus have been detected, one of which is still being tested in the laboratory.
